Internship Summary Global Montreal is seeking Journalism or Communications students, to intern for Fall 2024. The successful candidate will be a dynamic person with strong writing skills, understanding local news around them, basic knowledge of television production procedures and equipment, a genuine interest in all things Montreal. Qualifications

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in broadcasting, journalism, communications or other related fields;
  • Be eligible for university credit for this internship;
  • Be seeking a placement under a formal, credited internship program;
  • Be available weekdays or weekends for day/evening shifts;
  • Excellent command of written English and the ability to speak/read both English and French;

Who are we looking for?  

We are seeking a proactive Journalism Intern to join our community-focused news team in NDG (Notre-Dame-de-Grâce), Montreal. This internship offers an exciting opportunity for individuals interested in pursuing a career in journalism with a focus on community news and issues. 

This internship provides an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in journalism while contributing to the coverage of community news and issues in NDG. You will have the chance to work on diverse media platforms, including writing articles and preparing radio shows. 

Who we are? 

The Council is one of Canada’s longest-standing not-for-profit community organizations, informally started by a group of active citizens in 1942, and formally registered in 1948. Today, the Council acts to promote, improve and sustain the well-being of the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce community and its residents. The Council is one of 31 Tables de quartier on the Island of Montreal, each with the mandate of bringing together and mobilizing various actors in its territory (community organizations, associations, institutions, the private sector) as well as residents to involve them in a concerted effort to identify community needs, set priorities for action, and ensure implementation and follow-up. 

Key Responsibilities and Tasks: 

  1. Research and write news articles covering local events, initiatives, and issues relevant to the NDG community. 
  1. Conduct interviews with community leaders, residents, and stakeholders to gather information for articles. 
  1. Pitch story ideas and develop compelling content that resonates with our audience. 
  1. Monitor local news and social media for relevant stories and trends affecting the NDG neighborhood. 
  1. Edit and proofread articles to ensure accuracy and adherence to journalistic standards. 
  1. Attend community events, meetings, and press conferences to report on news and stories of interest. 
  1. Assist in producing radio shows, including finding guests, preparing interview questions, and scripting segments. 
  1. Help manage and update content on our organization’s website and social media platforms. 

Qualifications: 

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program, preferably in Journalism, Communications, or a related field. 
  • Strong writing skills with an ability to engage readers through clear and concise writing. 
  • Ability to conduct thorough research and interviews to gather information for news stories. 
  • Understanding of journalistic ethics and standards. 
  • Experience or interest in multimedia journalism, including TV or radio production. 
  • Interest in community issues and a commitment to promoting local voices and stories. 

Hours: 

If the internship is for academic credit, this requirement aligns with standard credit-hour equivalency guidelines.

Two CBC Internships (deadline Aug 9)

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and Concordia University Journalism Internship

CBC News is at the forefront of local digital and broadcast journalism in Montreal.

At CBC Montreal, we gather, produce and broadcast news in Quebec for CBC Radio, CBC Television and CBC.CA/Montreal.

We are currently seeking two interns: One for the Fall 2024 session, and one for the Winter 2025 session.

Internships Goals

Each intern will be given the opportunity to gain practical experience at CBC News in Montreal.

Specifically, each intern will work as a junior member of the CBC News desk team and will learn to gather information, fact check, pitch stories, and take part in the broadcast production of stories. 

Internship Application Process

  • One audio or visual sample of your work.

Application Deadline for both dates: August 9, 2024 at 5pm

There is also an interview at CBC as part of the process.

Requirements

• 160 hours of for credit service. Approximately 16 hours per week for 10 weeks in CBC News Montreal.This amounts to 3 credits at Concordia.

• This internship is offered under the Jour 450: Journalism Practicum course, for a total of three credits. Students must obtain departmental approval to enroll in this program.
